Sports Medicine

By: Mackenzie L.

Sports Medicine has become a very popular and crucial specialty in the medical field. Since living in the United States you can see how heavy we place emphasis on sports in our culture. From the National Football League (NFL) to the National Hockey League (NHL) to the National Basketball Association (NBA), sports are loved but brings with it a lot of injuries.

Since the 1920s the practice of sports medicine has gotten bigger as sports have grown. Most athletes pick a sport at a young age and stick to that sport through high school and the rest of their athletic career. For example, I tried different sports but ended up swimming and I stuck with swimming for most of my life. But, continuous play of a single sport cause wear and tear on joints and muscles. This is why sports medicine doctors are so important. They work to treat injuries and also prevent them from reoccurring.

When you watch sports on TV, such as, Football and you see a player go down and people coming running to his aid these are the Medical Doctors and Athletic Trainers. Medical Doctors and Athletic Trainers are two of the most heard of and most popular jobs in Sports Medicine because you are aware of they are doing because you see it a lot of the time. But there are other jobs, Physical Therapists and Message Therapists that help athletes to make quick and complete recovers.

With sports being such a big thing in American culture, there is a bigger demand to have people to treat and help the athletes when they are injured. Because one wrong hit on the field, court or ice and your career could be over without the proper treatments. As an athlete would you want to go without a physicians that specialize in sports injuries?

Great entry! Growing up playing very competitive soccer, I have had a lot of encounters with all sorts of sports med professionals through myself, as well as my teammates. You are spot on when you say their is a growing demand, especially now that sports are becoming more serious and competitive at younger and younger ages. Thanks for the interesting post!
