A 15-month-old stray dog, named Caitlyn, was found on May 27th in horrific condition. She was sitting on a porch in North Charleston, South Carolina with electrical tape wrapped around her snout so tightly that her tongue was discolored and oozing blood.
Why would someone do this?
William Leonard Dodson was charged with animal cruelty on June 4th with a statement claiming that he had taped the dog's snout because she wouldn't stop barking. His bail was set at $50,000. Caitlyn underwent a complex surgery, to repair her tongue and snout, performed by a team of veterinarians at the Charleston Animal Society. It was originally thought that the dog would need additional surgery to completely repair her mutilated snout but her incisions healed well enough to avoid a second operation.
An incident like this one is a perfect example of the significant work done by veterinarians and everyone in the veterinary field. Without them, Caitlyn wouldn't have been able to survive much longer, let alone make a full recovery. With the help of hyperbaric and cold laser treatment, the damaged tissue in her mouth was saved. Through the initial grim odds, veterinarians have to be persistent and optimistic with every animal or case they encounter.
There are countless other stories of the amazing work done by veterinarians all over the world. More light should be shed upon some of the miracles that have been performed not only everyday at your veterinarians office, when your cat receives a vaccine to prevent a life threatening illness; but for all the times that they have left their warm bed to come into the office at 2:30 am to perform life saving surgery on your dog, who just ate you entire coin collection.
