Doctor-Patient Communication

By: Shane S.

A doctor would be nothing without its patients. The interaction between the physician their patients is one of the most important things in the entire medical field, if not the most important thing. If a doctor doesn't seem friendly, you wouldn't want him to examine you. If a doctor doesn't seem trustworthy, you wouldn't trust what he prescribes for you. There are so many factors that go into being a good doctor, but having your patient's trust and well being is everything.

If a doctor treats a patient with more kindness and respect as an individual, they will be more likely to follow the physician's instructions. Everything you say to the patient they take to heart as the doctor is someone who is suppose to be one of the most trustworthy people in society. Even in a doctor's prescription, they are heavily influenced by their patent's choice of prescription. When it's not a severe condition, what the patient prefers is huge factor

If and when a doctor misdiagnoses a patient, that can ruin their trust of the doctor and their validity. Think about it, what if you had a condition that affected your health and you were prescribed the wrong thing that made the effects of the condition even worse? You definitely would not want to go back to that doctor and not only does it affect the reputation of that doctor, if shakes your trust for medical personal as a whole.

Even a doctor's mannerisms affect a patient's perspective of a doctor. Even if a doctor prescribes the correct medicine and says the right things, they still might leave with a bad idea of the doctor. There is an etiquette that a patient expects from the physician. For example, when greeted, a patient expects a handshake and for them to say their first and last name. There is a very particular standard the person being examined perceives and deserves when being talked to.

Everything you can say and will be used against you-- even in the medical field. If you misdiagnose a patient, it will be reflected back on you. If you don't treat a patient with respect, they may not come back. Everything a medical professional says is vital to everyone in the medical field. It looks poorly on the entire staff is something goes wrong. In a field dealing with the well being of others, there's not a whole lot of error you can make.
