How Stress Effects Your Health

By: Shane S.

Stress: the one thing we all deal with and go through on a daily basis. Whether it be a minimal case of "I have an essay due in a week" to "I have an exam the next morning that I did not study for," we all deal with it in some shape or form.

What we may not realize are the direct effects stress can have on the human body and mind. Minor headaches to migraines, rapid breathing to a heart attack, there are important things we need to be aware of under a great deal of stress.

One of the greatest psychological effects stress can have is depression. There are many levels of depression, from feeling a little down for a few days to a lingering, major cloud that seems inescapable. Stress can cause additional anxiety and make things harder to get through.

Stress also can lead to a lack of sleep. A prolonged stress can cause insomnia, a condition that makes it nearly impossible for someone to fall asleep. This can also occur on a normal day as well. There have been many times where I don't feel stressed, yet have a hard time falling asleep.

The effects that aren't so apparent are the physical, more dangerous side effects. For one, stress can affect your liver. Your liver can release extra glucose into your bloodstream and if it persists too long, it can put you at risk for type 2 diabetes. Stress can also cause body aches, specifically back aches. It makes your muscles tense up and you develop pains all over your body.

Stress can also have an effect on your reproductive system. In women, stress can lead to an irregular menstrual cycle and heavier, more painful periods. In men, stress can effect the testosterone levels, making them drop, interfering with sperm production and possibly causing erectile dysfunction.

There are many ways to deal with stress and make it easier to overcome. The easy one you can do is to avoid drinking caffeine and alcohol. This can lead to even greater stress and depression when abused. Physical activity and a full night of sleep also help to alleviate stress. If those aren't working, try different relaxation methods to fully relax your mind and body. Talking to people can also help make someone less stressed.

One of the many things college students deal with on a day-to-day basis is stress. We've all been there and we've all had to overcome it in different ways. Stress continues into the real world as well in jobs, payments, bills, etc. It's important to know the effects stress can have on the body so you're able to combat the stress and put yourself at peace.

I think this post is one of the more prevalent posts because stress effects everybody and everybody is some form of stress. (First picture with the stress about exams and school work, story of my life) I liked how you explained all the causes of stress for both women and men, and also the physical and mental causes of stress. Not only did you include the causes of stress but you also included how to deal with stress, making this post very helpful and complete. So overall I think this is a nice post, but you might want to put your sources in MLA format. Just go to easybib and past the URL in and it will generate the situation for you.
